BMW 4 Series Facelift Preview: What’s Coming

BMW is gearing up to unveil the refreshed 4 Series Coupe, with the current second-generation model—launched in 2020—now ready for its mid-cycle update, commonly known as a Life Cycle Impulse (LCI). Recent spy shots and unofficial renderings have given us an early glimpse into the design and feature enhancements expected in the upcoming model.

Exterior Updates

The test mules, likely featuring the M Sport Package, reveal a redesigned front fascia—especially on the high-performance M440i variant—which appears more aggressive than the standard trims. Camouflaged fronts hide significant changes, including:

  • New headlight design with sharper, boomerang-style daytime running lights inspired by the updated BMW X5 and X6.

  • Sportier front bumpers emphasizing the performance character.

  • Revised taillights, partially visible, hint at styling similar to the latest BMW 3 Series.

Some prototypes have also been spotted in a Frozen Portimao Blue matte finish, possibly part of BMW’s Individual paint catalogue, complemented by matching brake calipers.

Interior Enhancements

The cabin is set to receive a major tech overhaul with:

  • The latest iDrive 8 infotainment system, featuring a dual-screen layout housed under a single curved glass panel—now becoming a brand standard.

  • A minimalist dashboard with fewer physical buttons, as more functions are integrated into the central display system.

Powertrain and Variants

  • The M440i will continue to be powered by a robust inline-six engine, paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox. A Competition variant is also expected, with improvements in engine performance and suspension tuning, bringing power figures close to the outgoing M5.

  • The regular 4 Series will continue offering 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, likely with boosted outputs. Some markets might also get six-cylinder options to provide a more premium edge over the 3 Series.

Launch Timeline and Market Strategy

The facelifted 4 Series is expected to make its global debut in late 2023 or early 2024, with production set for March 2024. The updates will extend across body styles, including the Convertible and Gran Coupe, particularly in terms of interior tech.

For India, the updated 4 Series could be a key launch, especially with BMW India actively expanding its product lineup. Introducing the refreshed model will help the brand strengthen its premium portfolio and align with its rising sales ambitions in the country.
