BMW i4 Electric Sedan Launched in India

BMW Group India officially launched the BMW i4 electric sedan on May 26, 2022, marking it as the third electric offering from the German automaker in India—following the BMW iX electric SUV and the MINI Electric. Priced at an introductory Rs. 69.90 lakh (ex-showroom), the i4 becomes India’s first electric premium mid-size sedan and boasts a segment-leading range of up to 590 km (WLTP cycle) on a single charge. While the i4 has no direct competitor in the electric sedan segment yet, it will indirectly rival models like the MINI Electric, Kia EV6, and Volvo XC40 Recharge in terms of pricing and positioning.

The BMW i4 sports a sharp, dynamic design inspired by the next-gen 4 Series. Key styling highlights include the closed-off signature kidney grille, sleek LED headlamps, distinctive blue accents, and L-shaped LED tail lights. Buyers can enhance the sporty look further with the optional M Aerodynamic Kit, which adds aggressive bumpers, exclusive 18- or 19-inch M Light Aerodynamic alloy wheels, and gloss-black M elements. The i4 is offered in three colour shades: Mineral White, Black Sapphire, and Skyscraper Grey.

The cabin of the i4 continues BMW’s tradition of luxury and sportiness. It features Perforated Sensatec upholstery in Canberra Beige or Cognac, with sport seats in the front and a 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench. The centerpiece is the curved driver-focused display, combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central infotainment screen into a seamless panel. Running on BMW’s latest iDrive 8 software, the infotainment system supports over-the-air updates, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and includes a BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant for voice-controlled features.

Additional premium features include a wireless phone charger, 17-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system, and a parking assistant with a rear-view camera.

Under the hood, the BMW i4 is powered by the brand’s fifth-generation eDrive technology, which integrates the electric motor, single-speed transmission, and power electronics into one compact unit. The motor produces 335 bhp and 430 Nm of torque, enabling the i4 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The floor-mounted, 110 mm-thick lithium-ion battery pack has an 80.7 kWh capacity, offering excellent efficiency and range.

BMW is also including a complimentary 11 kW AC wall box charger with the car, capable of fully charging the battery in about 8.25 hours. The i4 supports DC fast charging as well:

• 50 kW fast charger: 10% to 80% in 83 minutes; 18 minutes of charge adds 100 km range.

• 205 kW fast charger: 10% to 80% in just 31 minutes; 10 minutes of charge yields 164 km of range.
