Next-Gen BMW X5 Spotted Testing: Set for Global Debut in 2026

The fifth-generation BMW X5 has been sighted undergoing testing in international markets, giving us the first look at what to expect from the upcoming SUV. Slated for a global debut in 2026, the next-gen X5 draws heavy design inspiration from the Neue Klasse X concept, which itself previews an all-new SUV launching this year. A Neue Klasse-based 3 Series sedan is also scheduled to arrive in 2026.

Evolutionary Design with Neue Klasse Influence

From the side profile, the upcoming X5 retains the overall proportions of the current (fourth-generation) model. However, a flatter front nose and smoother, curvier body lines signal a clear shift toward Neue Klasse styling cues. These softer surfaces contrast with the more angular design language of the outgoing model.

At the front, the SUV is expected to showcase:

  • A new slim kidney grille, similar to what was previewed on the Neue Klasse X,

  • A blanked-out panel flanked by integrated headlamps, offering a clean and futuristic look,

  • A minimalist bumper with a central air vent and reduced styling creases.

Notably, a flap on the front fender and a visible exhaust at the rear point to a plug-in hybrid variant in testing. The prototype also lacks traditional door handles, instead featuring sensor modules near the B- and C-pillars—likely for touch-sensitive or electric door releases.

Rear Design and Aerodynamics

The rear profile reveals:

  • An integrated roof spoiler for improved aerodynamics,

  • Two-piece horizontal tail lamps that stretch onto the tailgate, although heavily camouflaged,

  • A more pronounced rear bumper compared to the current-gen model.

Powertrain Expectations

BMW is expected to offer the new X5 in:

  • Internal combustion engine (ICE) variants,

  • All-electric versions, with minimal design differences,

  • Plug-in hybrid configurations, as hinted by the test mule.

Additionally, BMW is progressing with fuel-cell technology in partnership with Toyota. While the first hydrogen-powered model is expected by 2028, the next-gen X5 could serve as a suitable base for this upcoming drivetrain technology.
