Mahindra Thar.e
Description
Mahindra & Mahindra has officially announced that it will unveil an electric version of its Thar SUV—named Thar.e—in Cape Town, South Africa, on August 15. Although details remain scarce, the company has released a teaser confirming only the vehicle’s name. It is widely expected to be a concept model, with a production version likely still 2–3 years away. On the same day, Mahindra will also showcase its Global Pik Up Vision Concept.
While no specifications have been disclosed, it is anticipated that the Thar.e will retain familiar design cues like the boxy shape seen in the ICE (internal combustion engine) variant. However, it is uncertain whether it will be built on the same ladder-frame chassis, as integrating electric components like batteries poses engineering challenges on such a platform.
Contrary to previous speculation, Mahindra has clarified that the 5-door version of the Thar will not be unveiled on August 15. Instead, it is scheduled for launch in 2024. The delay is attributed to the high demand for the current rear-wheel drive Thar, which had over 50,000 bookings as of May 2023—resulting in extended waiting periods.
In related news, Temasek Holdings, an investment firm owned by the Singapore government, has announced a Rs 1,200 crore investment in Mahindra’s electric mobility arm. This deal will give Temasek a stake ranging from 1.49% to 2.97% in Mahindra Electric.
