Mercedes-Benz G-Class Overview

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, often referred to as the G-Wagon, is an iconic luxury SUV that combines rugged off-road capability with first-class comfort and cutting-edge technology. Originally developed as a military vehicle in the late 1970s, the G-Class has evolved into a status symbol known for its bold design, commanding presence, and unmatched engineering.

Design & Exterior

The G-Class retains its classic boxy silhouette, flat sides, upright windshield, and exposed door hinges, which give it a timeless and instantly recognizable look. Signature round LED headlights, a prominent front grille with the Mercedes star, and flared wheel arches add to its muscular appearance. High ground clearance, a sturdy body-on-frame construction, and protective underbody panels highlight its off-road readiness.

Interior & Features

Step inside, and the G-Class surprises with a luxurious cabin filled with premium materials like Nappa leather, wood, and metal accents. It offers spacious seating, especially in the front, and a modern dashboard featuring a widescreen dual-display setup – one for the digital instrument cluster and the other for infotainment. Ambient lighting, heated and ventilated seats, Burmester surround sound system, and voice-controlled MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) are among its tech highlights.

Performance

Under the hood, the G-Class typically comes in two main variants:

  • G 400d / G 500 – Featuring powerful diesel or petrol engines that deliver strong torque and smooth highway performance.

  • AMG G 63 – A performance-focused beast with a handcrafted 4.0L V8 biturbo engine, churning out around 577 hp and 850 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just about 4.5 seconds, impressive for an SUV of its size.

All variants feature a 9-speed automatic transmission, permanent all-wheel drive, and three locking differentials, making the G-Class extremely capable in off-road conditions.

Safety & Assistance

The G-Class is packed with advanced driver assistance systems like:

  • Adaptive cruise control

  • Active lane-keeping assist

  • Blind-spot monitoring

  • Surround-view cameras

  • Automatic emergency braking

Off-Road Capability

Despite its luxury status, the G-Class remains a formidable off-roader. It features a low-range transfer case, locking front, center, and rear differentials, and up to 700 mm of water wading depth. Whether on rocky trails, snow, or desert dunes, the G-Wagon can tackle tough terrain with ease.

Price & Market Position

In India, the G-Class starts at around ₹2 crore (ex-showroom) for the standard G 400d variant, while the AMG G 63 is priced upwards of ₹3 crore, depending on customization. It competes with other high-end luxury SUVs like the Range Rover, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus.
